Sapphire The Stone For September

The name sapphire comes from the Greek for blue. In the 1800's sapphire and rubies were known to be corundums. Today all the colours of corundums, except red, are known as sapphires, the red being ruby.

Sapphires can also be yellow and green caused by a small amount of iron in the stone. Pink sapphires are formed by chrome. Sapphires can also be brown and almost clear in colour with the orange variety known as Padaradscha which means lotus flower.

Since antiquity sapphires have been found in Sri Lanka. Today the precious stones are also mined in Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Burma, Kenya, Tanzania, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Kashmir blue colour is the most beautiful and the most valuable is the Burmese sapphire.

Star sapphires are particularly beautiful having a half dome cut with star like light effect. Coming in shades of blue and blue/grey. Star sapphires are very suitable to use in jewellery created for gentlemen.

The sapphire symbolises loyalty and the permanence of relationships is one of the beliefs linked to this stone.

At the Trevor Towner showroom there are always a large selection of beautiful jewellery made with sapphires and sapphires and diamonds.

For a more unusual gift an unset sapphire can be chosen and the recipient can decide which piece of jewellery they would like to have made with Trevor's skills. Truly a present which will last a lifetime and always hold the special memory of the occasion when it was given.

Queen Elizabeth II 80th Birthday Thimble

For Her Majesty The Queen's 80th birthday in April 2006 Trevor Towner designed a limited edition of 250 thimbles to mark the occasion.

The 25mm high thimble was made in silver/gilt with the base being surrounded by a representation of St Edward's Crown. The stones in the Maltese Crosses above the band were, looking from the front and moving in an anticlockwise direction, white topaz, purple amethyst, white topaz and green tourmaline.

The front of the thimble carried an engraving of the Royal Standard and the back showed the date of The Queen's 80th birthday, 12.4.2006, the limited edition number and the hallmarks: TT- Trevor Towner's sponsor's mark registered at the London Assay Office, the lion rampant - the traditional sterling silver mark, 925 - silver fineness mark, the leopard's head - the mark of the London Assay Office, and the letter G - the date letter for 2006.

The top was surmounted by a raised silver figure 80 in which the zero was set with a faceted diamond to indicate Her Majesty's diamond birthday.

The thimble was also made in 9ct and 18ct gold.

Trafalgar 200 Dish

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Nelson's victorious Battle at Trafalgar, Trevor Towner, designed and made a special silver dish to commemorate the event.

The four inch solid silver dish, which weighed 85g, was engraved with Battle of Trafalgar and 1805 – 2005 on the rim and HMS Victory in the centre.

The piece was hallmarked at the London Assay Office in 2005 and carried TT – the sponsors mark, 925 fineness mark, the leopard’s head of the London Assay Office, the lion passant – sterling silver mark and the date letter F for 2005.

If you would like a retrospective dish, you can still view it by appointment. However, future commissions will have to bear the relevant stamp mark for the year in which they are crafted, and priced in accordance to the current price of silver bullion.

Please use the Contact Us section of the website if you are unable to make a personal visit to the showroom.
